Rich's Israeli Aide: The Pardon Surprised Us. So Did the Furor.

As the controversy over President Clinton's pardon of Marc Rich mounts,
Americans, Israelis and Jewish leaders are pointing fingers at each other
over who deserves the most blame for the disputed clemency.
While Mr. Clinton pointed to Israeli and Jewish leaders' requests as a
factor in his decision, some American-Jewish leaders said that Israel was
being used as a "scapegoat" for the pardon. In Israel, meanwhile, Mr.
Rich's boosters gave conflicting accounts of what brought them to advocate
his cause. Some suggested he had an important role in Israeli foreign
policy, ...
