There may be a new battle in store for one of the most durable combatants
in the ideological wars of America and New York, William F. Buckley -- the
race to succeed Senator Moynihan.
While few New Yorkers so far are talking out loud about a candidacy for Mr.
Buckley on the Conservative Party line, plenty are whispering about it. The
Conservative Party's candidate for governor in 1990, Herb London, confirms
he's heard the speculation. So have numerous other members of New York's
chattering classes.
