Naomi Sokoloff teaches courses on Hebrew literature and Israeli culture at
the University of Washington, where she is a professor in the department of
Near Eastern literatures and civilization. She is co-editor of "Visions And
Divisions In Israeli Society: Books On Israel Vol. 6," to be published
later this year by SUNY Press.
Reading contemporary Hebrew literature in the United States can feel like
finding a hidden treasure and then, oddly, discovering that no one wants a
share in the riches. The small circles of serious readers who ardently
follow Israeli fiction and poetry rarely succeed in spreading that
enthusiasm to wider audiences.
