Shuls Heading for Cities, Bucking Suburban Trend

PHILADELPHIA -- Dreary skies and freezing rain greeted members of
Congregation Mishkan Shalom Sunday, as they gathered to celebrate the
completion of their "new" synagogue building.

The lack of sunshine could be interpreted as an inauspicious welcome from
the heavens. But the gloomy weather was an apt metaphor in the case of
Mishkan Shalom, a 13-year-old Reconstructionist congregation that eschewed
the comforts of a suburban location for the challenges of a working-class
urban neighborhood.
