Starting a magazine is a difficult proposition. Starting an alternative
Jewish publication is an even tougher one.

Just ask Alan Kaufman, a veteran editor of some highly acclaimed but
short-lived alternative Jewish publications, including the glossy Davka
(1996-1997) and the recently departed online 'zine Tattoo Jew. "No magazine
has a good shot of surviving," Mr. Kaufman told the Forward from his home
in San Francisco. "A niche magazine within the Jewish community faces a
particular problem."
