Morongo Pow Wow: from small event to big gathering

MORONGO INDIAN RESERVATION, Calif. - Pow Wows are not traditional to
Southern California tribes, but about 12 years ago the Morongo band of
Mission Indians decided to throw their first one on their reservation
located on the dusty roads between Los Angeles and Palm Springs

By all accounts, it was a sparsely attended affair.

Last year more than 25,000 people came to the three-day event, always held
on the last weekend of September after the scorching summer sun has
slightly cooled. These figures give the Morongo pow wow a claim to being
the largest in the Golden State.
