Chinese lead in organ donation

ALOR STAR, Sun. - The Chinese community leads the way in pledges to
donate organs for transplants, while Malays are reluctant to sign
up as donors.
Chinese make up 68 per cent, or 47,240 of the total of 69,519 donors,
followed by Indians (21 per cent or 14,805) and Malays (7.6 per cent
or 5,293).
The rest is made up of other races.
Public education sub-committee on organ donation chairman Tan Sri
Lee Lam Thye said although Malays were generally aware that organ
donation was allowed in Islam, they were still uncomfortable with
the idea.
