ONE question raised with any Shaw production is a matter of relevance. Is a
play originally written in 1915 relevant to an audience of today? Unlike
other classical literary figures, Shaw's themes have seemed to tire among
contemporary audiences. But Broadway's new production of Major Barbara is a
pertinent and invigorating presence. Though the make-up of the audience on
Friday night's preview was dominated by a markedly aged theatergoer, its
subject is universal.
