THE first thing you noticed were the lights. Then came the tents, dozens of
them. Then finally, it was the monstrous trucks moving atop the hill, with
numbing efficiency and regularity.

As images of 9/11 go, this may seem like tame stuff. We were, after all,
bombarded with images of suicidal planes, of the twin towers crumbling,
again and again. Mere floodlights, tents and trucks may seem almost
comforting.

But not when all that activity was taking place atop the Fresh Kills
landfill, which, on the morning of September 11, was closed and padlocked.

That was certainly good news for this columnist, who (for better or worse)
resides on the south shore of Staten ...
