When parents say they have a good baby, they are invariably speaking about
one thing -- their child sleeps at night. Parents can tolerate almost
anything else from an infant: a child who's up all day and aggressive about
needing attention, or one who feeds all day and seems unappeasable, even a
baby that cries all day -- as long as when darkness comes, he makes the
necessary separation, snuggles down in his crib and sleeps a good long
time.

For many couples, though, this is not the scenario in the first months of
their baby's life -- or even during the whole first year -- and that can
