Within the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem is the Jewish Quarter, where
Jews have lived since the time of the First Temple. Today, it is a modern
neighborhood filled with homes, synagogues and yeshivot. It was rebuilt
after the Six-Day War, after Israel unified Jerusalem.
In 1948, when the Arabs attacked Israel after statehood was declared,
Jordan had taken control of the east part of the Old City, including the
Jewish Quarter. Jews were forbidden to live there, and much of the area was
destroyed. When the city was unified, many of the families who had lived
there before were the first ones to move back and rebuild.
