of irresistible pull of the Anne Frank story.

Miriam Kramer, veteran high school English teacher, was nervous about the
book she was planning to introduce to her class in Manhattan.
The book was a translation, set in a foreign country, about the life of a
Jewish teen, and most of Kramer's students were black and Puerto Rican.
Her assignment: "The Diary of Anne Frank."
For two weeks her students discussed the book with their parents at home
and read excerpts in class. "There were tears," Kramer says. "I remember
