Among the nation's highest-ranked universities, the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill has consistently shown the highest percentage of
blacks entering each year's freshman class. This past fall 429 black
first-year students began study at the university. They made up 11.6
percent of the freshman class. Enrollments of black students at Chapel Hill
continue to rise. African-American enrollments were up 4.4 percent in 2001
from the fall of the year 2000.

The strong performance at Chapel Hill has not been mirrored at North
Carolina State University in Raleigh, a less selective and slightly larger
