According to crime statistics reported to the United States Department of
Education, there have been 20 people murdered on the campuses of American
colleges and universities over the past two years. Six of those murders,
nearly one third of all murders at colleges and universities, have occurred
on black college campuses.

The high murder rate on black college campuses is not a new phenomenon.
From 1993 to 1998 there were at least 12 murders on black college campuses.
For example, in 1993 homicides occurred at Fayetteville State University,
Howard University, Jackson State University, and Wilberforce University.
