In Jackson Heights, Indians and Pakistanis live and work peacefully side by
side, openly gay residents share the sidewalks with veil-covered Muslim
women, and the local bookstore offers best-sellers in Spanish, Russian and
numerous other languages.
So perhaps it is not surprising that in this Queens neighborhood of vivid
contrasts, the leadership at a struggling Conservative synagogue with a
traditional bent and decidedly elderly membership is staking its future, in
part, on outreach to gays and lesbians.
"Why not?" said Jewish Center of Jackson Heights president Steven Knobel,
59, referring to the fledgling outreach efforts in the largest gay
neighborhood ...
