Rabbi Eliezer Schach, 103: Outspoken haredi leader and scholar was a major
influence on country's political scene.
Rabbi Eliezer Menachem Schach, who headed one of Israel's most prominent
yeshivas for a generation and helped mold the country's fervently Orthodox
community into a potent political force, died last week of heart and kidney
failure in Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer. He was at least 103 years
old, and some media reports put his age as 108.
Though he was in failing health in recent years and publicly inactive since
1996, his death leaves the non-chasidic haredi community without an
