Q. In last week's column you discussed how people can protect themselves
from someone misusing their Social Security number. Is Social Security
successful in bringing charges against people who break Social Security
laws?

A. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has a zero tolerance policy
when it comes to people who commit Social Security fraud and abuse. Let me
give you a recent example. Just last week, it was announced that a Laredo
resident, Maria de Jesus Sanchez, was sentenced in the District Court of
Texas (Laredo) to five years probation with a special condition that she
