A tribute to Ruth Washington: Publisher, Los Angeles Sentinel

Ruth Brummell Washington was born in Salina, Kansas on August 12, 1914. Her
father, Erasmus, a soldier killed in World War I, and her mother, Oma,
lived in Wildersville, Tennessee, and later moved to Salina, Kansas, where
Ruth was born.

At the age of 14, Ruth went to Denver to live with an aunt. While in
Denver, the bright youngster attended business school in the evening, in
addition to attending junior high school during the day. When she was 16,
Ruth returned to Kansas City where her mother had moved.

In 1940, Ruth moved to Los Angeles, where she met and married Col. Leon H.
