Tony-winning "Side Man's" has Fascinating Rhythms
"Side Man" pays tribute to the sidemen who shored up the Big Band sound,
the instrumental choir adding grace notes to the lead musicians' glory. But
"Side Man" also shows wives shunted aside and kids left on the sidelines.
It is a robust and touching comedy drama set in the backstage world of
white jazz musicians of the `50s and `60s, full of late nights,
instability, drugs and a dying profession, barely counterbalanced by dogged
love for a sweet and frustrating art. The silver melody that faded to a
dirge, symbol of a dying breed and a world ready to dance to a different
beat.
