In the cutthroat world of news making, coverage is often driven by the most
sensational, controversial and scandalous of topics.
For African-Americans, this has resulted in a biased and limited portrayal
of ourselves: we are heartless criminals, angry activists or slick
entertainers. But thanks to independent and aggressive journalism by
African American-owned publications like the Los Angeles Sentinel,
African-Americans across Southern California receive news that paints a
richer, more balanced picture of our communities.
Thanks to the Sentinel, we not only see our shortcomings and mistakes; we
also read about our achievements and triumphs. ...
