What can be said about a man whose judicial wisdom has been compared to
that of Thurgood Marshall, the first Black justice on the U.S. Supreme
Court?

Florida Supreme Court Justice Leander J. Shaw, Jr.'s friends and colleagues
found the words to do so at his retirement ceremony at the courthouse last
week.

Shaw's career in law extended over 42 years from the racial tensions of the
1960s to the present. He must retire because the Florida Constitution
establishes a mandatory retirement age for justices that occurs on or after
their 70th birthday. His retirement becomes final in January.
