Burger King reneged, says La-Van Hawkins

African American franchisee La-Van Hawkins has filed a $1.9 billion
discrimination and breach of contract lawsuit against the Burger King
Corporation. According to Hawkins, the lawsuit stems from an agreement with
Burger King that would have allowed him to purchase or build 225
restaurants by 2000.

In 1996, Burger King Corporation chairman Robert C. Lowe stood with Hawkins
and President Clinton on the White House steps and pledged that 125
Hawkins-owned restaurants would be built over the next five years in urban
