There is no such thing as being born to be star, but Whitney Houston comes
about as close to it as possible. In the mid-80s, when she soared into the
stratosphere of seemingly instantaneous superstardom, it was as though it
was meant to be.

How could Houston have possibly not succeeded? She had everything going for
her, including an extraordinary voice; a record company, Arista, whose
president, Clive Davis, was ready and able to put everything into the
