The Detroit Institute of Arts recently opened the exhibition "Over the
Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence," a retrospective of the work of
artist Jacob Lawrence. More than 160 vibrant, colorful works tell the story
of Black America through images of heroes such as Harriet Tubman and John
Brown, everyday life in 1930s Harlem, and subjects reflecting social and
philosophical concerns of the 20th century.
"The DIA is proud to be a part of this extrodinary tour," said Graham W.J.
Beal, director of the DIA. "Detroiters have long collected the work of
Jacob Lawrence and we expect this retrospective will be warmly embraced by
our community."
