The Michigan Chronicle Show Business Hall of Fame: Sidney Poitier
If one looks up the word "icon" in any dictionary, the definition is bound
to include two words: Sidney Poitier.
No, that is not true, but it perhaps should be. Poitier's achievements are
that significant. He is the first Black superstar actor. The first (and
only) Black actor to win the Academy Award as Best Actor. The stellar actor
who paved the road and provided the inspiration for so many of today's
foremost Black actors.
It has only been a recent development for Black actors to have enough
across-racial-boundaries box office appeal to "carry" a movie. And with
