Amsterdam News Series looks at Black life in New York City
In the 1920s Harlem was the core of Black cultural life in America, serving
as the migratory home for millions of people during the turn of the
century. Many came to Harlem and left, leaving behind their own legends --
still, many stayed. In the series "Being Counted", two Amsterdam News
reporters will spend the next 52 weeks documenting how Black people are
counted and how they define themselves within their communities, since
migration plays a role in acculturation and establishing identity.
