First portrait of an African-American on display at White House
In commemoration of Black History Month, the White House has received an
extended loan from the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery,
"Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)," a bronze bust by sculptor Charles
Alston. The bust of King is now on display in the White House Library,
where it will be seen by the thousands of visitors who tour the White House
throughout the year. The display of the bust marks the first time that the
image of an African-American has been displayed in the public spaces of the
White House.
