First civil rights activist assassinated; documented on PBS
In 1951, after celebrating Christmas Day, civil rights activist Harry T.
Moore and his wife, Harriette, retired to bed in their white frame house,
tucked inside a small orange grove in Mims, Fla. Ten minutes later, a bomb
shattered their house and their lives. Also shattered was any hope that the
South was ready to give up centuries of white supremacy for a new era of
racial equality without a bloody fight.
