`Reading the Amsterdam News changed my life'

It was 1955, a little after 5:30 in the evening, and I was working late
again as a volunteer for the Adopt-A-Child Project, housed in the Urban
League building on 136th Street. Dr. William Jackson, the executive
director, came into my office and said, "We've got to get some political
endorsements for the project if it is going to survive." So I made an
appointment with Cecil E. Carter, district leader of the Washington Heights
Democratic Club, to get his support and wise counsel.
