Article: A leap of faith puts Edward Waters College on solid ground

When Jimmy Jenkins first visited Edward Waters College as a candidate for
the president's job in 1996, he turned around and went back to North
Carolina. But after being convinced to accept the position, Jenkins has
turned the school around.

What Jenkins saw on the first visit was the result of years of financial
instability, poor management and declining enrollment that had caused this
urban institution to be on the verge of losing its accreditation.

"When I came here, the college was eight-and-a-half-million dollars in debt
with about $800,000 owed for back salaries and taxes, and the enrollment
was down to 319 students," a reflective Jenkins said. ...
