Oakland - Oakland Athletics pitcher Barry Zito was named the American
League Cy Young Award winner November 7 in voting announced by the Baseball
Writers Association of America. Zito received 17 first place votes, nine
second place votes and two third place votes and was named on all 28
ballots. The 24-year old left-hander totaled 114 points to finish ahead of
Boston's Pedro Martinez in balloting conducted by two writers from each
American League city.

Zito becomes the fifth Athletic to win the award, the first since Dennis
Eckersley in 1992. Vida Blue was the first recipient in 1971, Jim "Catfish"
Hunter was honored in 1974 and Bob Welch took home the award in 1990. Since
