Ending rite of female circumcision
There are several rites of passage a woman can go through here in the
United States: Wearing her first bra, moving from middle school to high
school, going on her first date -- all simple incidents declaring that a
young girl is slowly maturing into womanhood.
But elsewhere in the world there are rites of passage that are much more
intense. In many countries on the continent of Africa, young girls go
through a harmful, involuntary ritual of circumcision, genital mutilation
that signifies they have crossed over to the next plane of their lives.
