MAZAMA (AP) -- Clouds covered much of Washington state Monday,
giving firefighters a much-needed break at wildfires on both sides
of the Cascades.
Nearly a half an inch of rain fell in some parts of Eastern Washington,
slowing the fires' growth and allowing crews to strengthen fire lines,
said Greg Thayer, a spokesman at the 24,500-acre Needle Creek fire
about four miles west of Mazama.
The National Weather Service forecast more clouds and the possibility
of more rain today.
The change in conditions allowed fire managers to cancel an evacuation
order early Monday for residents of about 75 homes nearest the Needle
