Twenty-five years ago The Michigan Citizen began publishing in Benton
Harbor. At that time the city was the poorest in the nation and now a
quarter of a century later, it still is. An entire generation has been born
and grown up in these miserable conditions. Everyone that lives or drives
through a Michigan city - Detroit, Highland Park, Flint, Pontiac - has seen
similar conditions in at least part of every one of these towns. Abandoned,
crumbling houses, joblessness, no opportunities other than drug dealing or
body selling, failing school systems and most of all, total disinvestment
