Outsourcing is not a new phenomenon. Companies in various sectors have long
parceled out jobs to subcontractors for economic reasons. The reason why it
has become a conspicuous issue now is that an increasing number of
outsourced jobs have started to shift overseas.
Until recently transnational outsourcing was mostly confined to the larger
companies like GE, Microsoft, Bank of America, Texas Instruments, Intel,
Boeing, and American Express. According to a New York Times report, India
is an outsourcing destination for more than half of the world's 500 biggest
companies.
