Dynamited by the communists in 1962,35 chapels dating back to 1770 were
rebuilt and were dedicated by the archbishop of Vilnius. Lithuania's famous
"Way of Calvary" now welcomes multitudes of faithful once again to the
wooded shrine on the outskirts of Vilnius (formerly Polish Wilno). The
sanctuary is similar to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, recently visited by the pope
near Krakow.
The only Catholic church to survive Soviet rule in Kazakstan was
reconsecrated. Built by Polish deportees in 1911, Sacred Heart Church was
closed after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and its last pastor was shot
