Since 1980, the United States Census Bureau has conducted a nationwide
survey of the ethnic ancestries of the American population in one-sixth of
all households around the country.

This is part of its effort to count the entire population living in the
country. (The census is required every ten years under out Constitution,
mainly to determine the proper representation of Americans in the U.S.
House of Representatives).

Findings from these massive surveys have proved helpful in offering a great
amount of information about the diverse and continually changing national
