Geier saw "no equity" for TSU so she sued, case took 32 years
Rita Sanders Geier was a 23-year-old history instructor at Tennessee State
University when she sued the State of Tennessee, alleging violation of
civil rights laws because of unequal funding and the state's intention to
build a campus for the University of Tennessee in Nashville.
"I absolutely knew that this would be a long haul," Geier, now 56, said
early this month on the eve of a court decree that could end the oldest
case on the federal docket here. She anticipated a time frame for the case
at "maybe 10 years, but I was much younger and more impatient," Geier told
the Tennessee Tribune.
