Article: Beale St. Baptist Church closing points to history of struggle

The Beale St. Baptist Church was closed recently by the city's Division of
Fire Services because of structural deficiencies. The closing was not
adversarial according to Chief Fire Marshall Alvin Benson. "We met with the
pastor and other church officials and they agreed the building should be
closed," he said.

The Fire Department discovered the deficiencies as a result of routine
inspections of buildings in the area Benson pointed out. "We've become
particularly sensitive to the condition of older church structures since
the tragedy that occurred with the New Hyde Park Baptist Church on
Mississippi", he said.
