Mississippi Senator Trent Lott was sailing along smoothly and primed to
assume his position as Senate Majority Leader next month until he opened
his big mouth. The long-time Senator made comments praising the 1948
presidential candidacy of Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-N.C.) who ran on a
segregationist platform. The comments were made during a party celebrating
Thurmond's 100th birthday. Since that time a salvo of criticism and
complaints have been directed toward Lott from Blacks, Democrats, members
of the Republican party and even from President Bush.
