Sierra Leone Tests U.S. Resolve on Africa

The crisis in Sierra Leone, where rebels have captured hundreds of U.N.
peacekeepers, may be the biggest test yet for the Clinton administration's
commitment to show more interest in Africa, analysts say.

Its hesitant response so far vindicates critics who say that President
Clinton's promises of active engagement with the continent were more talk
than substance, they maintain.

If Washington backs away from the challenge, the world will conclude that
it does not really care about conflicts where immediate U.S. interests are
