Every year, students in the District's public schools - fourth through
eighth grades - look forward with renewed expectations to the annual
Washington Informer-sponsored City-wide Spelling Bee competition.

The result of that munificence sees winners now getting cash prizes instead
of saving bonds as was the practice in the past. "This year, the 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd place winners in the city wide spelling bee competition will get
$500, $300, and $200 cash prizes respectively," said Denise Rolark Barnes,
the inspired and inexhaustible publisher of the Washington Informer and
hostess of "Reporters Round Table on Channel 16".
