Hundreds of German World War II veterans turned out in a Russian village Saturday for the emotional opening of a restored Russian Orthodox Church near a cemetery that holds the remains of thousands of their comrades who were killed fighting Soviet forces.
Some 32,000 German soldiers are buried at Sologubovka, 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of St. Petersburg and at the heart of an area where deadly battles raged. The nearby church was restored under an initiative of the People's Association for the Care of German War Graves, which was also involved in the opening of the cemetery in 2000.
