They are creatures of seemingly endless stamina and spirit, and have been objects of childhood fantasies for more than a century. But the wooden steeds and other animals that have graced carousels are a dying breed. Of more than 10,000 wooden carousels that were made in the United States, only about 150 of the antique machines still operate.
