They are creatures of seemingly endless stamina and spirit, and
have been objects of childhood fantasies for more than a century.
But the wooden steeds and other animals that have graced carousels
are a dying breed.
Of more than 10,000 wooden carousels that were made in the United
States, only about 150 of the antique machines still operate.
The Northwest features a handful of them -- including carousels
in Salem, Seaside, Seattle, Spokane and Puyallup.
With the recent addition of five carousels at Clackamas Town Center,
there are now three places to hop a ride in the Portland area. That'
