After his daring rescue from the South Pole, an ailing American research worker left Monday on a flight to the United States for medical treatment, according to an official with a Chilean company involved in the operation.

The Lear jet left from Chile's southernmost city, Punta Arenas, for Houston, Texas, just before 9 a.m. (1300 GMT), said Marcos Delgado, manager of Aerosan, a Chilean company that specializes in air ambulance services and was assisting in the transfer operation.
