Nobuhiko Matsunaka belted a pair of home runs Thursday as the Daiei Hawks inched closer to winning the Pacific League pennant with a 5-1 victory over the Nippon Ham Fighters at Tokyo Dome.
Matsunaka connected for a two-run homer in the first inning and added a solo blast in the top of the sixth which gave the Hawks a 5-0 lead. Hiroshi Shibahara chipped in with a two-run homer in the fourth.
Rookie Tsuyoshi Wada struck out 11 and gave up one run on six hits over eight innings to pick up the win and improve to 13-5. Takayuki Shinohara retired the side in the ninth for his 10th save.
