A digital camera is different from a conventional camera in the sense that instead of using film to capture an image, the digital image is recorded by a charge coupled device (CCD) or complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS).

The CCD consists of many thousands of light-sensitive circuits packed into a space typically measuring 1/4-inch-square. Together, these circuits capture a complete image. The CCD or CMOS replaces the chemical emulsion of traditional film.
