MOST men say that they were closer to their mothers while growing up. Mothers always seemed to understand them and their aspirations. Never mind if they did not concur, mothers tend to spoil them, as they invariably put it gratefully.

"My father used to beat me whenever I brought the report card home from school. I kept doing better and better, but still he beat me. After some time, I didn't see why I should show it to him," Tan said, embittered by the memory.
