PENANG'S worse fire in recent years at the Gat Lebuh Sandiland cluster colony on July 22 destroyed 60 homes and left 100 families homeless.

The homes, located off Jalan C.Y. Choy, were on a road alignment site for the privatised Jelutong Expressway project.
Although the residents were to be relocated in 2002 to make way for the project, the fire - cause still unknown - has accelerated this process.
