BUTTERWORTH, Fri. - Of the about 50,000 working Muslims in Penang who have to pay the individual zakat (tithe), only 36 per cent are doing so.

Despite that, the Pusat Urus Zakat (Penang), the tithe collection centre, collected RM1.8 million in the first eight months of this year.
"This is very encouraging considering the collection of tithes from 17,000 Muslims last year was only RM1.7 million," its general manager Ismail Saad said today.

There are 1,500 new individual tithe payers this year.
